Korean seniors trading leveraged ETPs lose an average of nearly 30 million KRW per person
According to Yonhap News, South Korea launched single-stock leveraged ETPs on May 27 this year. By August 14, in less than three months, retail investors had accumulated losses of 6.313 trillion KRW (approximately $4.7 billion) across 546,000 accounts.
The hardest hit were middle-aged and elderly investors:
- Investors aged 70+ had 9,800 accounts, losing a total of 293.4 billion KRW, averaging about 29.94 million KRW per account (approximately $22,500).
- Those in their 60s lost an average of about 13.21 million KRW per account.
- By total losses, the 40s age group topped the list, with losses of approximately 2.05 trillion KRW.
Since August, realized losses have increased by another 360.4 billion KRW in just half a month. Yonhap News speculates this could be due to investors cutting losses and exiting, or being forced to liquidate by brokerages.
