[Former BOJ Official Predicts Rate Hikes Every Three Months in the Future]
Jin10 News, October 21 – Former Executive Director of the Bank of Japan, Eiji Maeda, stated that the BOJ might continue raising interest rates every three months to mitigate the risk of inflation deviating from its price stability target. Maeda said, 'I expect the next rate hike to occur in December, followed by another possibly in March or April next year. Currently, the pace of rate hikes has accelerated to approximately once every three months, which I believe is appropriate.' This assessment largely aligns with market expectations.
Maeda also noted that the possibility of consecutive rate hikes during back-to-back monetary policy meetings cannot be entirely ruled out, especially in scenarios such as a sharp depreciation of the yen. However, he believes such a possibility is unlikely at present. Maeda stated, 'If the BOJ announces rate hikes at two consecutive meetings, the market may increasingly anticipate further hikes at the next meeting, which would pose considerable risks. Therefore, the BOJ has reason to avoid raising rates during consecutive meetings.'
