What is gold spot and gold futures arbitrage?
Simply put: When there's a significant price difference between gold spot and futures, you buy low and sell high at the same time to earn the spread. Once the price gap returns to normal, you close the positions.
If futures are much more expensive than spot, you can buy spot and sell futures. When the futures price drops, you close both positions, and the spread becomes your profit.
If futures are much cheaper than spot, you can sell spot and buy futures. When the futures price rises, you reverse the positions to lock in the profit.
Why does a price gap exist? Under normal circumstances, futures price ≈ spot price + carrying costs (interest, storage, insurance, etc.). When the gap deviates too much, there's an opportunity for arbitrage.
For example: Spot gold price is 500 RMB/gram, and the 3-month futures price suddenly jumps to 520 RMB/gram, which is clearly overpriced.
You buy spot and simultaneously sell an equivalent amount of futures. After some time, when the futures price drops back to a reasonable level (e.g., 505), you close both positions. The spread, minus costs, is your profit.
