[82 Crypto Projects Shut Down by 2026, Involving DeFi, Infrastructure, and Web3 Gaming]
Odaily Planet Daily News: Crypto researcher Stacy Muur has listed 82 digital asset projects and protocols that are reportedly shut down by 2026. The list includes Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM, Step Finance, and others, spanning the fields of DeFi, blockchain infrastructure, and Web3 gaming. The shutdowns are attributed to factors such as declining revenue, depleted funding, and security incidents. Earlier this year, Bitcoin's price briefly fell below $60,000, retreating from its all-time high of over $126,000 in October 2025, which added financial pressure on projects.
When Ethereum Layer 2 network Blast announced its closure, it stated that the project lacked a "credible path to economic viability." Step Finance shut down due to a major treasury vulnerability, while Radiant Capital announced its closure after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit.
According to an August study by DeFiLlama, 100 crypto projects had announced shutdowns by 2026, with 40 of them occurring in the previous 90 days. The most common reason cited was a mismatch between product and market, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue, and pivoting to other products. Collectively, these projects raised approximately $1 billion in funding and incurred $250 million in expenses, with nine individual projects raising over $50 million each. (Cointelegraph)
