After Helium and IO, I once felt that the DePIN track was difficult, especially for retail oriented DePIN. The gap between consumer hardware and cloud vendors' capabilities was too large, and scaling up would not achieve much. It would always be a "token subsidy" and there would be no real PMF to find
But later on, Pi actually went to the big school, and Grass was much more successful than I expected, which can be considered a small slap in the face
The reason why Grass runs smoothly, I remember writing on Twitter before, is that they are not selling computing power, but residential bandwidth and IP. This thing is really useful in AI large-scale data capture, and there is a real demand for it (a single source IP is too easy to be blocked)
I saw @ Acurist on EchoHunt these days, and after a little research, I was exploring a direction relative to Make Sense - if Grass proves that the most valuable distributed home PC is residential IP, then what is the biggest advantage of distributing billions of mobile phones worldwide?
The advantage is not necessarily computing power, but the hardware security chip that comes with every phone. This thing is usually only used for unlocking and facial recognition, which is somewhat wasteful. If connected, can it be used as a cloud in a specific scenario?
The chips in mobile phones all have hardware level TEE and Attestation, which naturally proves to the network that I am a real machine and the code runs in Enclave without being tampered with.
This is fundamentally different from the server computing power market. The latter largely relies on node self reporting configuration, and brushing volume and fraud have always been old problems (everyone understands). Acurist is a hardware authentication system where each device identifies itself. For DePIN, 'verifiable' is rarer than 'scale'.
At the data level, over 330000 mobile phones have been connected and over 1.1 billion on chain transactions have been made. The mainnet and TGE were launched in January this year, and Binance Alpha, Contract, Bybit, Bitget, Kraken, and others have all been launched. On October 15th, I just joined Bithumb's Korean won pair
Of course, don't expect mobile networks to run large-scale decentralized training/inference. The future focus should be on lightweight inference, oracle machines, on chain automation, bandwidth, and residential IP, which is a bit like Grass's bandwidth/IP, with an additional layer of verifiable computing power.
But like all DePINs, the ultimate question to be answered is whether the payment demand behind the mainnet can outperform the inflation of node incentives.
If you have an idle phone and want to run a node to experience it yourself, you can give it a try. It's like a pig's foot rice, and if you run out and order something, you might even add a chicken leg
