[Swiss Regulator Approves the Country's First Bitcoin ETF]
Foresight News reports that the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has approved the country's first publicly traded fund directly investing in Bitcoin. The fund falls under the category of alternative investment funds under Swiss law and is labeled as carrying special risks.
FINMA stated that, given Bitcoin's longer trading history and higher trading volume compared to other cryptocurrencies, it has exempted the fund from the applicable risk diversification rules. However, it requires regulated entities to take measures to mitigate operational and custodial risks and to clearly disclose risks in the fund documentation. FINMA emphasized that even when investing through an approved ETF, Bitcoin remains a high-risk asset, and invested capital may significantly depreciate.
Additionally, several fund institutions have already submitted or announced plans to submit similar applications. Previously, in 2021, FINMA approved a cryptocurrency fund aimed at qualified investors.
