"On Chinese Twitter, there’s a bunch of self-proclaimed experts criticizing Big Wang’s election loss and acting like they know it all. Honestly, I can’t stand it anymore. As someone deeply involved, let me share a few thoughts: 1. The root cause of Big Wang’s loss is that he barely got any votes from Hongkongers or white voters. The main reason Hongkongers didn’t vote for him was the competition for seats with Common Sense, which led Richmond’s Chinese political heavyweight, O Zeguang, to directly rally the Hong Kong community against him, claiming he lacked experience. This message was amplified by Li Wanhua and spread throughout the Hong Kong community—it was purely a seat battle. Over a month ago, I tried hard to push for an alliance between Forward and Common Sense, but it failed due to Kenny’s anti-CCP stance. As for white voters, they didn’t support him because he was labeled as a populist. This stemmed from one inappropriate tweet that triggered backlash in the English-speaking community, which was then amplified by local mainstream media like Global News and Reddit, turning him into a collective target for white voters. 2. The idea that Richmond’s Chinese community is divided among Mainland Chinese, Hongkongers, and Taiwanese, as some self-proclaimed experts on Chinese Twitter claim, is completely false. Anyone who’s attended local Chinese events knows that Chinese politicians here are fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Hongkongers, Taiwanese, and Mainland Chinese live together seamlessly in their daily lives without any barriers. Richmond’s Chinese community has a solid foundation; what’s lacking is the integration of Chinese political forces. The results of this city council election provide a golden opportunity for such integration. If we can form a cross-party conservative organization that secures seats across all three levels of government elections, we’ll finally move past the fragmented state where everyone works independently and only plays a supporting role. Right now, there are too many factions, and integration is tough, but it’s absolutely necessary. 3. The most active players in this election were the United Front organizations, because Richmond is too important. But in the end, the United Front forces were completely defeated—from puppet Alexa Loo to strategist Ding Guo to operative Jiang Hao, all failed. This was the result of joint efforts by traditional conservatives, Big Wang, and a group of behind-the-scenes contributors. Richmond would’ve been in a much worse state under United Front control. Richmond, as an important testing ground for overseas Chinese (especially Mainland Chinese) in politics, has made a great start. Let’s look forward to an even better tomorrow!" #Richmond #CityCouncil #Election
