Holy crap! You can scan for spy antennas inside a Ledger without taking it apart!
Former Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpelès shared a hands-on video demonstrating a clever detection method: using RF resonance to find hidden LTE antennas without disassembling the device.
The process is pretty straightforward:
1. Get a NanoVNA (portable vector network analyzer) and a cheap RF probe.
2. Place the Ledger flat on a non-conductive surface like a wooden table, and position the probe consistently over the device.
3. Scan frequencies around 800MHz, focusing on signal responses near 824MHz.
4. Compare two Nano X devices: a sample with an LTE antenna will show a noticeably stronger signal curve, while a normal device will have much weaker responses.
The principle is like doing a mini radar scan on your hardware wallet:
An LTE antenna generates RF responses at specific frequencies, which can potentially be detected by external instruments—even through a plastic casing.
