"A/ Here we go again with the wild moves—selling AI Agents that replace white-collar workers while setting aside company shares as 'compensation funds' for the jobs AI might take.
Anthropic just announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund:
- Starting with 5% of company shares (pending shareholder approval)
- Every time the company’s valuation increases by 50% over a baseline, the board can add another 2%. The exact baseline will be announced in the coming months.
- The 5% is just the fund itself. The widely circulated '20%' figure includes everything: the co-founders’ early pledge to donate 80% of their personal equity, stock donations from about half the employees (with the company matching proportionally), adding up to roughly 20% of shares earmarked for 'public benefit.'
The two most interesting points:
1. The company openly admits that this structure—'the more valuable the company, the more the fund gets'—is basically the same tiered equity incentives tech companies use for executives. The twist? This time, the 'incentive' goes to the public.
2. Where’s the money going? One example explicitly mentioned is addressing job displacement: AI might destabilize a lot of workers’ livelihoods. Anthropic has already poured $200 million into researching this issue and now says 'bolder measures' are needed, including 'direct distribution to specific groups.'
In plain language: AI Agents (automated task-executing assistants) take your job, then hand you money from company shares. One hand creates unemployment, the other hand gives compensation.
So, is this the private-sector version of UBI (Universal Basic Income) for the AI era, or just the priciest pre-IPO branding stunt ever?
