[Binance and Coinbase Participate in West Africa Anti-Fraud Operation, Assisting in Identifying Over $11 Million in Funds to Be Frozen] Odaily Planet Daily News: According to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice, law enforcement agencies in Ghana and Nigeria arrested 28 individuals in a joint operation targeting a West African fraud network, involving crimes such as cryptocurrency investment scams. The operation was led by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) with participation from Binance, Coinbase, and blockchain analytics companies Chainalysis, Elliptic, and TRM Labs. Private sector partners identified over $11 million in funds that could potentially be frozen, though this amount has not yet been confirmed as recovered assets. Coinbase stated that it assisted in tracking illicit funds, supporting asset freezes, and providing intelligence to investigators, identifying over 65 victims still being scammed and helping to prevent potential losses exceeding $415,000. During the operation, Ghanaian police arrested 19 individuals and seized 303 electronic devices, while 9 others were arrested in Nigeria. Additionally, 117 victims of human trafficking in Ghana are awaiting repatriation to Nigeria, and participants provided law enforcement with leads on more than 30 suspected fraud centers. The U.S. Department of Justice noted that this is the first joint operation of its kind specifically targeting the West African region. (CoinDesk)
