Transferring a sum of money on the chain may allow the other party to see your assets along the address. We seem to have been used to this for too long.
After watching Damian's interview, I think there is an idea worth paying attention to: Zcash has shown the market the demand for privacy assets, but if users still want to trade and use DeFi with these assets, privacy capabilities need to continue to be developed.
It's normal to think about it. I make a payment to someone, there's no need to tell them how much money I still have, what currency I bought, or which addresses I usually deal with. The company uses on chain wallets to pay salaries, and does not want everyone to follow the records and flip through employee income and company fund arrangements.
On chain transparency has its value, but the more it is used, the more people will realize that some information does not need to be made public to everyone.
What interests me about Starknet doing STRK20 is adding optional privacy to existing networks and DeFi ecosystems. Users can choose to block supported asset balances, conduct private transfers, or perform private exchanges through AVNU.
What I value more here is that after protecting privacy, assets can still be used. Otherwise, if you put the coins in, you will have to tinker around again when you want to trade, and many people will be too lazy to use them again after trying them once. Being able to connect with existing wallets and liquidity is the key to making privacy a part of daily operations.
Of course, private exchange does not mean that all transaction information disappears. Deposit and withdrawal, as well as some application side operations, are still publicly available. The specific protection measures depend on the functions and access methods used. This boundary needs to be clearly defined.
If more trading, lending, and fund management tools can be integrated, we will have the opportunity to use on chain finance while exposing less of our own financial information. This is also where programmable privacy is worth continuing to work on: transferring money is just the beginning, and there are many scenarios that will be used every day in the future.
This is also one of the reasons why I will be following Starknet and STRK next. Privacy requirements are already being verified, and the next step is to see who can turn it into a feature that users are willing to use repeatedly. After all, what ordinary users need is to leave some personal space for their financial life while using on chain finance normally.
