[Polygon Labs Completes Acquisition of Coinme, Leveraging Stablecoin Infrastructure to Challenge Visa and Stripe in Payments] According to a report by CoinDesk on October 18, Polygon Labs announced the completion of its acquisition of Coinme, a U.S.-regulated crypto payment service provider, aiming to leverage stablecoin infrastructure to enter the payment industry dominated by Visa and Stripe. CEO Marc Boiron stated that the acquisition enables Polygon to gain control over customer relationships and capture revenue that previously flowed to intermediaries. He emphasized that Polygon is already a company focused on payments, using blockchain to transfer funds. This acquisition marks a strategic shift for Polygon: in January, it launched the Open Money Stack to support stablecoin payments and cross-border transfers, now allowing it to charge fees for currency exchange and transfers. Boiron expressed optimism that the regulated payment business could become profitable by 2027. However, Polygon remains in its early stages: Visa's payment volume exceeded $12.3 trillion in fiscal year 2025, while Stripe reached $1.9 trillion. Coinme enables Polygon to gain greater control over crypto, stablecoin, and fiat currency exchanges, rather than directing customers to third parties. Its unified payment platform is still in technical preview and has not been fully launched, with early users including Tazapay, Mesh, Toku, and Kira.
