$5-5% Diesel, Corn, Five-Year Yield Ceiling Inklings
Heating-oil (diesel) and corn futures, and the US Treasury five-year note yield, may be peaking near $5 and 5%, respectively, at the start of October. My graphic features diesel and corn prices and the five-year yield breaching these thresholds in 3Q and backing down in 4Q. Staying above $5 and 5%, respectively, would have inflationary implications when affordability has become a top election issue and the Federal Reserve has started hiking rates. My bias is that typical high-price and high-yield cures will prevail, and the chart highlights a top potential catalyst -- a bit of reversion in stretched beta.
Market peaks and troughs are common at the start of October, as evidenced by Bitcoin's 2025 apex on Oct. 6 and the S&P 500's 2022 nadir on Oct. 12. Rising commodity prices, bond yields and Fed rate hikes on the back of the energy crisis may prove ephemeral.
