[Claude Cracks NSA's 25-Year Elliptic Curve Seed Mystery]
According to CoinDesk, an internal research model by Anthropic traced the origins of the five elliptic curve seeds provided by the NSA to NIST in the late 1990s in less than half an hour. These numbers, long suspected of harboring backdoors, were actually generated using the random number generator `lrand48` from an old C language library combined with timestamps from 1997 and 1998. The model reproduced the widely used P-256 curve sequence, precisely matching the publicly disclosed seeds at the 1,842nd candidate value. Anthropic stated that this discovery significantly reduces the likelihood of hidden backdoors, meaning users of NIST curves do not need to take any action. However, it remains unexplained why the process skipped certain usable candidate values.
