1. AI and chip stocks got hammered
The big AI boom is cooling off for now. Chip companies and related stocks fell sharply. The Nasdaq dropped about 4.5 percent for the week, its worst week since June. Names tied to AI data centers and cloud computing got hit especially hard because investors are questioning how much debt these companies are taking on and whether the profits will actually match the hype. Even strong results from a major chip maker did not stop the selling.
2. Inflation came in hotter than expected
Prices rose more than people hoped in the latest report. Overall inflation hit 3.7 percent over the past year, pushed higher mainly by energy costs. That made markets worry the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates again or keep them high longer to cool things down. Higher rates make borrowing more expensive, which tends to hurt growth stocks and riskier assets.
3. Oil prices jumped toward 110 dollars
Brent crude climbed above 110 dollars a barrel. Tensions in the Middle East tightened supply fears. More expensive oil feeds into higher gas and energy costs for everyone, which adds more pressure on inflation and company profits.
4. Rate hike fears returned
Because of the hotter inflation numbers, traders quickly raised the odds that the Fed will hike rates later this year. Bond yields stayed elevated around 5 percent on the 10 year Treasury. When rates look like they are going higher, money tends to move out of speculative tech and crypto and into safer places. The Fed meets later this month, so markets are watching closely.
5. Crypto softened along with stocks
Bitcoin traded around 81,000 to 82,000 dollars and drifted lower with the broader risk off move. It does not move independently of tech stocks or rate expectations right now. When Wall Street gets nervous about rates and AI spending, crypto usually feels it too. Mining related stocks also fell with the Nasdaq.
In short: Investors are worried that inflation is sticky, rates may stay higher, oil is expensive, and the AI trade got ahead of itself on debt and valuations. That combination pulled tech and crypto lower this week. Next week’s big company earnings and the upcoming Fed meeting will be the next big tests.
