[Citigroup and Bank of America Restrict AI Agents from Accessing Accounts to Prevent Automatic Fund Transfers and Losses]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on October 17, Citigroup and Bank of America became the latest U.S. banks to restrict AI agents from accessing customer accounts. Major banks have expressed concerns to regulators that AI agents might transfer idle funds in pursuit of higher returns, leading to deposit outflows.
Citigroup stated that the bank does not allow 'third-party AI agents or assistants to log into customer accounts or directly initiate transactions within our digital banking platform,' emphasizing that this measure is aimed at protecting the security of customer accounts and information.
Brian Moynihan of Bank of America also noted that until relevant rules are established and the ultimate responsibility for AI-authorized payments is clarified, the bank is limiting AI agents' access to retail deposits. 'We firmly believe that any transfer of funds from accounts must go through manual review and authorization,' Moynihan said in an interview on Wednesday. 'We are in discussions with AI agent service providers: you certainly don’t want customers coming to you, saying their account funds were inexplicably transferred and untraceable, all due to actions taken by an AI agent.'
A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Bank of America has already implemented access restrictions.
