Shocking! The Taiwanese government directly blocks Coinbase and Kalshi! Even the world’s largest U.S.-listed cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase, has been affected this time. According to Bloomberg, a Taiwanese court has authorized the blocking of Coinbase and the prediction market platform Kalshi’s websites. The reason? Allegedly violating the "Public Officials Election and Recall Act" by involving election result gambling. With Taiwan’s local elections approaching on November 28, the government has started cracking down on election betting. And this isn’t the first time. Previously, Polymarket was also blocked in Taiwan. Now even Coinbase has been dragged into this. But I think the real question worth discussing is: As the cryptocurrency industry gradually integrates into the global mainstream financial market, is Taiwan truly ready to face this industry? On one hand, the U.S. is actively developing cryptocurrency, prediction markets, and financial innovation. On the other hand, Taiwan, due to concerns over election gambling, is directly restricting access to international platforms. Of course, election gambling inherently has legal issues, and the government has a responsibility to ensure fair elections. But should legal disputes over specific activities also affect regular cryptocurrency exchange users? This is what I think deserves the most discussion. Especially since Coinbase is not just a simple prediction market platform but a U.S.-listed cryptocurrency exchange. At this stage, it’s still only an allegation of illegality and website restriction, which doesn’t mean Coinbase has been found guilty of any crime. Do you think Taiwan’s move to block Coinbase is reasonable enforcement or overregulation?
