Once fierce rivals, now teaming up—Meta and Apple are accelerating the rollout of edge AI. Developers can now locally run Meta's latest open-weight AI model, Muse Spark Open, directly on Apple's high-end desktop computer, Mac Studio. Keep in mind, these two giants previously clashed over privacy and ad tracking, so Alexandr Wang humorously remarked, 'Mom and Dad are getting along again.' This collaboration is a win-win: 1) For Meta, it provides strong proof and marketing highlights for its open-source strategy, attracting developers to download and deploy the model, thereby expanding its ecosystem influence. More importantly, it further elevates its position as the leader of 'American open-source models,' which carries significant brand value. 2) For Apple, it showcases the power of its Apple Silicon (especially the unified memory architecture) and MLX in local/edge AI, proving that Mac Studio can run cutting-edge, large-scale models. This strengthens its 'desktop AI' differentiation advantage, contrasting with Nvidia's dominance in data center GPUs. It could also boost sales. Of course, the entry barrier is still high (after all, it requires hardware worth tens of thousands of dollars), so for now, it's more suitable for developer experiments, small teams, or specific enterprise deployments rather than widespread adoption. Truly large-scale edge AI on phones/laptops will still require smaller models or further optimization. But this proves the feasibility of 'running powerful models on your desk' and can be seen as an important step in moving edge/local AI from concept to practicality. Overall, this is a win-win for Apple to strengthen its hardware advantage and Meta to expand the influence of its open models, while also offering the industry a new 'local-first' option. Gotta say, Meta's strategy is looking smoother and smoother these days. https://(x.com)/qinbafrank/status/2109821700733116508?s=46&t=k6rimWsEbo2D2tXolYcM-A
