[Over 150 WhatsApp Account Hijacking Cases in Two Weeks, Hong Kong Cryptocurrency Exchange Company Loses Over HK$4 Million]
Odaily Planet Daily News: Hong Kong police announced that over the past two weeks, they have received more than 150 reports of WhatsApp account hijacking scams, with total losses exceeding HK$15 million. Recently, an employee of a local cryptocurrency exchange company fell victim to account hijacking. The scammer locked the original work group, blocked its members, and replicated the group’s image, name, members, and profile pictures to create a fake group. Posing as a customer representative, the scammer requested cryptocurrency exchanges. Following standard procedures, the victims transferred cryptocurrency to the designated wallet provided by the scammer. It was only after discovering insufficient customer account balances and calling to verify that they realized they had been scammed, resulting in the company losing over HK$4 million.
The police reminded the public that while WhatsApp groups can be forged, the phone numbers of group members cannot completely match those of the real group, and the timestamps of conversations cannot be replicated. They also advised enabling two-factor authentication, verifying the recipient via phone before transferring funds, and avoiding logging into accounts on public WiFi or public computers.
