In 1991, Nintendo made a decision that would forever change the gaming industry and ultimately help create one of its biggest competitors. Nintendo had originally teamed up with Sony to develop a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo, resulting in a prototype known as the Nintendo PlayStation. However, just one day after Sony publicly announced the partnership at the Consumer Electronics Show, Nintendo shocked everyone by revealing a separate agreement with Philips instead. What started as a failed partnership became one of the most consequential turning points in video game history.
