MetaMask just launched an Agent Wallet that can integrate with the Grok bot. Tried it out, and here are a few key points worth noting:
1/ It’s a custodial wallet, meaning the private keys are stored on MetaMask’s servers.
2/ I tried converting it into a regular wallet to manage the private keys myself—it’s doable. But in that case, the private keys would be stored on the bot’s computer, which honestly feels less secure than keeping them on the server.
3/ Security-wise, in Guard mode, you can set up a whitelist and daily transfer limits. Transactions within the rules are executed directly by AI, while those exceeding the rules or flagged by risk scans require your approval via phone or email.
The principle is pretty straightforward: in this mode, we use login credentials to access the wallet (not the private key). You can’t sign transactions directly; instead, MetaMask’s server signs them on your behalf, and it checks your rules before signing each time.
I think this is a solid approach. Even if your login credentials are compromised, it’s unlikely that your funds can be transferred to addresses outside the whitelist.
4/ So, what’s the real risk? First, if both your email and phone are hacked. Second, if MetaMask’s servers are breached—then all wallet private keys could be lost, and the whitelist and transfer limits you set would become useless.
In summary, it’s fine to use it for small amounts and to test the waters. Let the little fox surf for you.
