[Fuzhou Jin'an Procuratorate Discloses Three Typical Cases of Crimes Involving Virtual Currency, Covering Money Laundering, Robbery, and Illegal Fundraising] Deep Tide TechFlow reports: On October 15, according to Fuzhou Evening News, the Jin'an District Procuratorate in Fuzhou recently disclosed three typical cases of illegal activities involving virtual currency. These cases include transferring stolen funds for money laundering, offline over-the-counter (OTC) violent robbery, and illegal fundraising under the guise of 'computing power mining.' Multiple individuals involved in the cases have been sentenced according to the law. The details of the cases are as follows: 1. **New Money Laundering Case**: The perpetrators assisted in transferring telecom fraud funds amounting to 210,000 yuan by "purchasing physical liquor to cash out and exchanging it for Tether (USDT) transfers." Two main offenders were sentenced to three years and seven months and one year and five months in prison, respectively, for the crime of concealing and disguising criminal proceeds. 2. **Offline OTC Robbery Case**: A criminal gang, under the pretense of conducting offline transactions for Tether (USDT), induced a merchant to transfer over 40,000 USDT to their virtual wallet. They then attacked the victim with pepper spray and violently robbed 340,000 yuan in cash. Five defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five years and seven months to ten years and four months for the crime of robbery. 3. **Illegal Fundraising via 'Computing Power Mining'**: The individuals involved illegally raised over 6.28 million yuan from the public by promoting "cloud computing power leasing with guaranteed high returns." This resulted in direct losses of over 3.48 million yuan for investors. The main offender was sentenced to three years and four months in prison for the crime of illegally absorbing public deposits. The procuratorate reminds the public that offline over-the-counter exchanges between legal tender and virtual currency constitute illegal financial activities and are highly prone to violent crimes. China has fully rectified and eliminated virtual currency mining activities, and public fundraising under the guise of computing power appreciation or mining hosting is considered illegal fundraising schemes. Participation in related transactions and investments is not protected by law.
