[Supply Chain Attack on Hardware Wallets Results in $100 Million Stolen, Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès Reveals Ledger Attack Details]
Odaily Planet Daily reports, according to Bitcoin News monitoring, Bitcoin News released a podcast where former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès and Foundation CEO Zach Herbert discussed one of the largest supply chain attacks in the history of the crypto industry. Mark Karpelès stated that he discovered a spy implant three weeks before the funds were stolen and contacted Ledger, but received no response. The implant contained a hidden cellular modem capable of directly reading the mnemonic phrases displayed on the screen and bypassing Ledger's own checks; even setting a passphrase could not prevent the mnemonic phrases from being stolen. Mark Karpelès mentioned that with $5 million, he could create an implant that would require X-ray detection to be discovered.
The podcast also discussed the hardware wallet distributor model, the Malaysian distributor behind the attack, on-chain tracking of the stolen crypto assets, the spread of the attack to Europe, why Trezor was not targeted, hardware wallet security, and multi-party computation solutions. The podcast timeline revealed that the amount stolen from hardware wallets reached $100 million, with $86 million transferred out within 24 hours.
