[Trump Pressures Mexico to Reach Energy Agreement, US-Mexico Trade Talks Stalled] Golden Finance reported on October 10, citing sources from the Financial Times, that Trump, during a mid-September phone call with Mexican President Sheinbaum, urged Mexican companies to establish more deals and cooperation agreements with American energy firms. Sources revealed that Trump initially inquired about the possibility of Mexico selling assets to the US, and the two sides also discussed arrangements similar to the US-South Korea energy agreement, including increasing purchases of American energy products. An American official stated that the discussions included Mexico expanding its imports of US natural gas to reduce its trade surplus with the US. Currently, US natural gas accounts for approximately three-quarters of Mexico's natural gas demand. The report noted that the new energy cooperation demands have raised concerns on the Mexican side and led to the postponement of formal trade talks originally scheduled for September, with no new date set yet. Mexico is seeking to reduce US tariffs on its automotive, steel, and aluminum products, but the national control of the energy sector is highly politically sensitive in Mexico. The US side, however, stated that the negotiations are progressing positively and that both parties remain in close contact.
