The entire crypto community owes ZachXBT a paycheck: he used $350,000 as bait, infiltrated a money laundering network, and helped the industry recover stolen funds
ZachXBT is truly the real treasure of Crypto.
He personally put up $349,700, pretended to be a client, and did business with an organized crime network suspected of laundering money for North Korean hackers. For every transaction, he willingly took about a 5% loss just to gain their trust.
Once trust was established, the network started informing him in advance about where the stolen funds from Bybit were headed next.
Using this intel, Zach uncovered a cluster of over $12 million in stolen Bybit funds, ultimately leading to $442,000 USDT being frozen by Tether.
He also confirmed the freezing of $332,000 USDC from the Poloniex hack and tracked another $3 million in criminal funds all the way to a sanctioned Huobi-guaranteed hot wallet.
While doing all this, he had no idea if the network would simply pocket his $350,000 or what personal risks he might face from prolonged contact with such an international money laundering operation.
Since 2022, he has helped freeze over $75 million in assets tied to North Korea-related incidents, many of which couldn’t be disclosed immediately due to law enforcement sensitivities.
In the crypto space, countless people talk about protecting the industry, but those who actually put their own money, time, and even personal safety on the line to go head-to-head with hackers and laundering groups are few and far between.
Rather than calling ZachXBT an on-chain detective, it’s more fitting to say he’s the crypto industry’s free, grassroots anti-money laundering infrastructure.
