[CFTC Investigates Former Congressman Kinzinger for Betting on His Own Pardon on Kalshi]
According to a report by Decrypt on September 30 (citing Politico), the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is investigating former Congressman Adam Kinzinger for allegedly using a Kalshi account to bet on whether he would receive a presidential pardon. The trades took place between December 2024 and January 2025, involving two contracts: 'whether he would be pardoned' and 'whether Biden would issue a preemptive pardon,' with the latter coming true. Kinzinger claimed he only made $823 in profit and incurred losses on about 25 trades, denying any wrongdoing. He stated that he had been out of office for two years, had no insider information, and had reviewed the platform's rules beforehand. Kalshi prohibits users from betting on contracts they are directly involved in, and the CFTC prohibits the use of material non-public information. Both the CFTC and Kalshi declined to comment.
