[Polymarket Introduces 'Sports Betting-Style' Anti-Addiction Measures in Response to Regulatory Calls]
According to a report by CNN on September 30, prediction platform Polymarket has launched new consumer protection and anti-addiction measures in response to regulatory demands. The measures include: users can set non-reversible deposit limits; they can add themselves to an 'exclusion list' to temporarily or permanently disable access to the platform; and the company has partnered with addiction treatment provider Birches Health to offer mental health resources for users exhibiting 'compulsive trading behavior.'
The report states that prediction platforms involve real money and resemble gambling, but are federally regulated by the CFTC and are not required to comply with state-level protections for casinos and sports betting. This month, over 98% of the platform's U.S. trading volume came from sports-related predictions. Currently, 44 states advocate for gambling-style regulation; a week ago, New York State filed a lawsuit seeking to shut down the platform, and Polymarket has countersued.
