According to a report by Jinse Finance on September 30, sources revealed that OpenAI plans to raise at least $30 billion from investors in a new round of funding. Previously, due to the postponement of its initial public offering (IPO) plans, the company has been seeking new financial support. Sources stated that OpenAI's target valuation for this round of funding is approximately $1.4 trillion (excluding the new funding amount). If achieved, this valuation could once again surpass the valuation of its long-term competitor Anthropic in the private market. Sources also noted that the funding negotiations are still in the early stages, and related arrangements may change. OpenAI declined to comment.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously stated that the company would not go public this year, instead focusing on addressing artificial intelligence safety issues, calling the current timing for an IPO "unwise." This round of funding is seen as a transitional financing alternative to an IPO, providing OpenAI with additional capital. OpenAI's most recent funding round occurred in March of this year, during which the company raised $12.2 billion at a valuation of $852 billion, including the funding amount.
