Aztec Labs is relaunching the privacy wallet zk.money after a three-year hiatus. The new version runs on the privacy-focused Ethereum Layer 2, Aztec Network, and adopts a self-custody model, ensuring that user balances, payment amounts, and counterparty information are not disclosed on the public ledger. Users can register ENS names like bob.zk.money to send and receive payments via links, and can also transfer funds directly to zk.money names from Ethereum-based exchanges. Aztec plans to integrate Ethereum DeFi protocols and release a mobile app in Q4. The original zk.money launched in 2021 but was shut down in 2023 due to scalability issues with its underlying architecture. During its operation, it supported over 75,000 unique wallets and processed transactions exceeding $100 million. Aztec emphasizes that the new wallet is a non-custodial product, meaning the company cannot access, transfer, or freeze user funds. The two old Aztec contracts attacked in June this year are unrelated to the current Aztec Network and the new zk.money.
