The Common Cents Act, which officially ends the minting of the penny, passed by the Senate tonight by unanimous consent and now heads to President Trump to be signed into law. House earlier this month also by voice vote passed the bill, which codifies into law to permanently stop the U.S. Mint from producing the one-cent penny for general circulation. The Mint officially stopped producing circulating pennies on Nov. 12, 2025. The bill also requires cash transactions to be rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cent and permits the Treasury Dept. to test a less costly metallic composition for the nickel.
