If you suddenly got $245 million, what would you do?
This 22-year-old Singaporean guy, Malone Lam (online alias "Greavys"), chose the most outrageous answer: blow it all at nightclubs like a king, then spend 20 years in prison.
After some time, he pleaded guilty in a Washington federal court, delivering the internet a highly ironic “cautionary tale”:
One phone call, 4,100 BTC stolen
In August 2024, he and his accomplices posed as Google and Gemini customer service reps, tricking a victim into giving up their Google Drive access and 2FA codes. They then drained 4,100 BTC straight from the victim’s wallet!
At the time of theft: worth about $230 million;
At today’s value: over $340 million!
️ Revenge spending that caught the FBI’s attention
After scoring the money, he went full-on “rich and reckless” mode:
- Blew $500,000 in a single night at a nightclub, handing out Hermès bags on the spot;
- Bought over 30 luxury cars in one go (Porsche GT3 RS, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, etc.);
- Spent $80,000 a month renting a lavish mansion and flexed his wealth on social media.
⚖️ 22 years old, traded for 20 years behind bars
This explosive case triggered a nationwide crackdown in the U.S., with 18 defendants taken down. He’s the 11th to plead guilty. Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 14 to 20 years, with formal sentencing set for December 8. His accomplices have already been sentenced to nearly 6 years.
He schemed to steal BTC, the currency of the future, but spent it as depreciating dollars. If he had just held onto those 4,100 BTC, the value increase alone would’ve netted him an extra $100 million.
Sadly, scammers’ vision only ever stretches as far as their next nightclub bill. Trading 22 years of life for 20 years in prison—no matter how you calculate it, it’s a massive loss!
