[Bank of England's Dhingra: Winter Performance Will Be Key to Assessing UK Inflation Risks]
Jin10 Data, September 24 – Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee member Dhingra stated on Thursday that the extent of long-term inflationary pressure on the UK caused by the Iran war will become clearer in the coming winter months. Dhingra pointed out that the UK is not currently experiencing the widespread price increases seen in 2022, when the Russia-Ukraine war led to a surge in energy prices and widespread inflationary pressure in the UK. Meanwhile, the UK labor market is also weaker now compared to that period.
She said: "I believe the critical time point will be during the winter energy situation, where we will understand the developments more clearly; we will gain better insight into wage negotiations and their final outcomes; at the same time, financial tightening policies are already underway."
She noted that signals regarding wage negotiations and other medium-term inflation drivers should gradually become clearer by the end of 2026. She also refuted the view that "raising interest rates early is crucial to maintaining the Bank of England's credibility in combating inflation.
