[U.S. SEC Commissioner Peirce: Extended Hours Trading Accounts for Less Than 1%, Concerns Over EDGAR's Overnight Processing Mechanism]
U.S. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce stated at the 24-hour trading roundtable that extended hours trading currently accounts for less than 1% of the total trading volume of NMS stocks and is highly concentrated in a few stocks. The NSCC transitioned to 24×5 clearing in June, operating continuously from 8:00 PM on Sunday to 8:00 PM on Friday. The Commission has approved the extension of operating hours for securities information processors, with the new schedule set to take effect on December 6, and has also approved the implementation of a full-market circuit breaker mechanism during extended hours.
Peirce raised concerns that the EDGAR system typically processes filings submitted after 5:30 PM on the next business day, questioning whether the Commission needs to upgrade the system to ensure the timely dissemination of critical information during overnight trading. She also mentioned that South Korea's major exchanges announced plans last week to extend trading hours.
