[Bank of England Announces Cancellation of Long-Term Government Bond Sale Plan] According to a report by Jinse Finance, on September 17, as part of a major adjustment to its quantitative tightening plan, the Bank of England has canceled its plan to sell long-term government bonds. Under this plan, its £488 billion investment portfolio will be gradually liquidated by September 2034. According to proposals not yet finalized, the Bank will retain £120 billion of UK government bonds maturing in 2049 or later, aligning them with future banknote issuance. Additionally, £222 billion of bonds maturing before 2035 will be gradually liquidated, while the remaining £146 billion of bonds maturing between 2035 and 2049 will be sold at a rate of £20 billion per year, potentially directly to the government via the Debt Management Office. In a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Bank of England Governor Bailey stated that this arrangement "preserves the independence of monetary policy" and will "maximize funding efficiency by minimizing costs and risks during the implementation of the plan." During consultations with the UK Debt Management Office (DMO) regarding the terms of the sales, all planned quantitative tightening auctions will be suspended until April next year. This postponement is expected to alleviate short-term pressure on government bond yields by avoiding competition with government bond issuance.
