[Lagarde: Europe cannot solely rely on purchasing AI technology from the U.S.]
According to a report by Golden Finance, on September 14, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that Europe cannot solely rely on purchasing artificial intelligence technology from the United States but must also independently develop relevant components; otherwise, it risks falling into a vulnerable position. Lagarde said, 'Importing new technology instead of developing it independently is not inherently bad.' However, she pointed out that artificial intelligence is 'special' for specific reasons. In addition to data protection, Lagarde emphasized the issue of access, as once AI becomes widely used, any withdrawal or change in terms will 'simultaneously affect all industries.' 'This is a type of influence that no trade partner has ever had over Europe before,' she said, 'and this influence can be leveraged in any negotiation, such as on tariffs or digital taxes.' These remarks further reinforce the calls from Lagarde and other European Central Bank officials: Europe must not fall behind in AI development due to economic risks and sovereignty concerns.
