[Hackers Exploit Symbiosis Bitcoin Bridge Vulnerability to Mint syBTC Worth Approximately $46.1 Billion, Cash Out Only $336,000] Odaily Planet Daily News: On-chain security platform Blockaid has discovered a vulnerability in the Bitcoin bridge of the cross-chain protocol Symbiosis. Attackers minted approximately 2^62 syBTC to a newly created externally owned account, with a nominal value of about $46.1 billion based on 8 decimal places. They sold approximately 4.39 WBTC on Ethereum's Uniswap V4, cashing out around $336,000. Symbiosis stated that the attack occurred around 4:28 AM on September 11, and the team has since suspended BTC routing. Other routes remain operational and unaffected. The team has recovered approximately 15 Bitcoin and deposited them into a multi-signature wallet controlled by the team. They have also offered the attacker a white-hat bounty of 20% of the funds, with a deadline of September 13. In recent weeks, security incidents involving the minting of unbacked tokens to expand supply have occurred with Liquid Network, Nomic, and Symbiosis. As of September 13, Symbiosis has not publicly disclosed a technical review of BridgeV2, the final loss amount, or confirmation of whether the attacker accepted the bounty. (Bitcoin.com News)
