Why split 1000U into ten parts for contracts?
It’s not because there’s some kind of magic. Quite the opposite—1000U is so little that if you lose it, it’s not even worth flipping the table over. I later realized that small accounts have a troublesome issue: the less money you have, the more impatient you get. With 1000U, you want to turn it into 10x as fast as possible, preferably within a week. If the first trade loses, you immediately think about making it back on the next one; after two consecutive losses, you go all-in on the third trade, muttering to yourself, “This time it’ll work for sure.” Many liquidations happen exactly like this.
That’s why I’d rather split it up and only allow myself to use a small portion each time.
If I mess up one trade, I accept it. If I mess up several trades in a row, I stop.
It’s not because I suddenly became timid—it’s because I know that when people are losing, their brains are especially good at making excuses for themselves. What’s even more interesting is that the same thing happens after you make money. Once you double your account, you start thinking you’re a genius; when you hit 10,000U, you feel like your previous positions were too small. As your account grows, your hands get itchy too, and often it’s not the market that takes your profits—it’s you, thinking you’re not earning fast enough, who ends up giving it all back.
So now I have a very simple habit: when I reach a certain profit, I take some out.
Once the money leaves the trading account, you suddenly become much calmer. As for high leverage, I’ve become less and less of a believer. Sure, it can make your account numbers jump quickly, but it can also leave you no time to regret.
This is what makes contracts so interesting: you think you’re fighting the market, but most of the time, you’re actually fighting the part of yourself that says, “I want to make it back right now.” One thing I’m certain of—don’t let today’s impulsiveness use up tomorrow’s chips ahead of time.
