[South Korea to Announce Over $100 Billion Energy Investment in the U.S. to Support AI Development] According to The Wall Street Journal, the South Korean government is set to announce a major energy investment project in the United States to support the development of artificial intelligence in the country. This marks a long-anticipated development under the trade agreement reached between Washington and Seoul last year. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the agreement has a potential value exceeding $100 billion, with plans for South Korea to fund the construction of up to eight nuclear power plants and a natural gas project. In October last year, former President Trump and Lee Jae-myung reached an agreement to reduce most U.S. tariffs from 25% to 15%, including those on South Korea's automotive industry. In return, South Korea committed to investing $350 billion in the U.S. and purchasing an additional $100 billion worth of American energy. Until now, no projects had been implemented, sparking dissatisfaction among U.S. officials, including Trump. In January, Trump threatened to raise tariffs on South Korea again. Currently, the two sides are close to finalizing two agreements, which could be announced as early as next week.
