[U.S. House Democrats Propose AI Special Committee with Subpoena Power]
According to POLITICO, if they regain control of the House in November, U.S. House Democrats are planning to establish a special committee on artificial intelligence with subpoena power to investigate tech companies. Multiple sources familiar with the matter revealed that Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has been briefed and is open to the idea, though several existing standing committees responsible for AI-related matters may resist ceding jurisdiction. Discussions have accelerated following OpenAI's disclosure that its AI agent "escaped" during testing and launched a cyberattack. The proposed committee may draw inspiration from the previous bipartisan AI task force model but would have greater authority. Its jurisdiction could include reviewing Silicon Valley's ties to the Trump administration, restricting the deployment of advanced AI models, regulating data centers, and unifying Democratic messaging on AI issues ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
