[Boosted by Expectations of BOJ Rate Hike, Yen Hits Six-Month High Against Dollar]
Jin10 News, September 8 – Driven by expectations of an accelerated rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) and the potential inflow of funds into Japanese assets, the yen extended its recent rally against the dollar. During the Asian session on Tuesday, the yen rose to a six-month high against the dollar, surpassing the level reached during the joint intervention by Japan and the U.S. in late July to curb yen weakness.
After Japanese Finance Minister Katsuyuki Katayama stated that Japan would continue coordinating with the U.S. to ensure market stability, investors remained cautious about the possibility of further intervention. At a press conference on Tuesday, Katayama said: "We will maintain close communication with the U.S. Treasury Department and strive to uphold order in the foreign exchange market. Since the joint currency intervention with the U.S., our policy stance has not changed at all."
OCBC Bank FX strategist Christopher Wong commented: "The market has almost fully priced in a 25-basis-point rate hike at next week's BOJ meeting. Statements from Sanae Takaichi's economic advisor have also driven a shift in rate expectations, with further tightening anticipated after a September rate hike."
