[Irish Criminal Gangs Renting Private Vaults to Store Crypto Keys]
According to Decrypt, Michael Gubbins, head of Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau, stated that organized crime gangs are renting private safety deposit boxes to store cryptocurrency wallet private keys and mnemonic phrases, alongside cash, luxury goods, and passports. This practice has been reported to the government's anti-money laundering steering committee, which is preparing for the implementation of new EU regulations in Ireland next summer—at that time, cash transactions exceeding €10,000 will be prohibited, and merchants spending over €3,000 in cash will be required to identify customer identities. Gubbins pointed out that criminal gangs perceive cryptocurrencies as anonymous, but price volatility and the risk of losing wallet passwords remain major issues. The use of cryptocurrencies by Irish criminal groups is still 'fairly basic,' with cash remaining dominant.
