🚨The official US national debt just hit $40 TRILLION, but is that the real number?
The $40 TRILLION only counts what the government has already borrowed, not all the benefits it has promised to pay under current law.
Total federal liabilities exceed $176 TRILLION when you include what's missing, per Truth in Accounting:
- $74.5T in unfunded Medicare
- $54T in unfunded Social Security
- $15.5T in military and civilian retirement benefits
After accounting for federal assets, the estimated shortfall is $170.3 TRILLION.
That works out to $1.1 MILLION per federal taxpayer.
The net interest bill is projected to exceed $1 TRILLION in 2026, above projected US defense funding.
Social Security's retirement trust fund is projected to run dry in late 2032, leaving enough revenue to pay only 78% of scheduled benefits without congressional action.
In early 2024, the debt crossed $34 TRILLION and then-Fed Chair Powell warned:
"The US is on an unsustainable fiscal path."
"We're effectively borrowing from future generations."
It has grown nearly $6 TRILLION since, and nothing has changed.(Coin Bureau)
