[Heightened Vigilance Among Traders Ahead of Bank of Japan Decision, 'Silver Week' May Serve as Intervention Window]
Reported by Golden Finance, on September 3, with the Bank of Japan's decision imminent, yen traders are highly alert to the risk of intervention by Japanese authorities. As the Bank of Japan's decision will be followed by a three-day holiday, market participants believe the authorities may take advantage of the low liquidity period during the holiday to act. The yen continued its rally on Thursday following Wednesday's gains, highlighting market anxiety ahead of the Bank of Japan's September 18 policy meeting, where the central bank is widely expected to raise interest rates.
In April this year, Japanese authorities waited until the country's long holiday period to conduct their first intervention since 2024. Now, investors speculate that Japan may adopt a similar strategy during the 'Silver Week' holiday, which begins shortly after the conclusion of the Bank of Japan's policy meeting. Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist Samara Hamoud stated: "'Silver Week' may further increase uncertainty in yen movements, primarily because market liquidity could decline further during the holiday period. Over time, the USD/JPY exchange rate may once again test the previous high that triggered intervention. If this scenario unfolds quickly, especially around the Bank of Japan meeting, the risk of further intervention will rise significantly." (Jin10)
