Bitcoin's Bear Market vs. the Fed, Stocks
Central bank tightening, unlimited crypto competition and increasing dependency on a rising stock market are some primary headwinds for Bitcoin. Has the crypto bottomed or is it bouncing within a bear market? My bias is to the latter and the graphic highlights a top reason why: Federal Reserve restraint. Fed funds futures in one year (FF13-FF1) are priced for about 55 bps of tightening, last comparable to 3Q21 when Bitcoin peaked near $69,000. At about $77,000 on Aug. 29, the crypto has recovered from its 200-week moving average, but faces its downward sloping 50-week mean near $81,000.
Bitcoin's roughly 12% decline in 2026, along with the almost 20% drop in the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, despite about a 13% rise in the S&P 500, may signal cryptos have failed the test. What of Bitcoin when stocks drop?
