The U.S. Treasury is weighing its $𝟵𝟱𝟬𝗕 TGA to finance expanded buybacks of long-dated government bonds, per CNBC citing two senior Treasury officials.
𝗛𝘂𝗽𝘇𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: Spending down the TGA injects cash into the banking system — the opposite of draining reserves — while absorbing long-dated supply puts downward pressure on yields. Both forces are 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 for BTC. The Treasury already doubled individual buyback operations from $2B to $4B, and Bessent signaled they could go larger. Even partial deployment of the $950B reservoir would meaningfully ease long-end supply pressure.
Watch for official announcements on buyback sizes and TGA balance changes in coming weeks — those will signal the pace of liquidity injection.
