[Jane Street Lost $15 Billion in July Due to AI Fund Situational Awareness and Tech Stock Sell-Off]
According to Reuters, Wall Street trading giant Jane Street suffered a loss of approximately $15 billion in July due to market sell-offs impacting the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness and its tech stock holdings. The fund is managed by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. In July, the sharp decline in AI stocks triggered margin calls, forcing the fund to sell off most of its stock portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel. Jane Street is one of the investors in the fund. In a memo to employees, Jane Street acknowledged that July was a "terrible month," with the fund's significant drawdown wiping out the company's year-to-date stock gains. However, the company noted that the overall investment remains profitable since its inception.
