[Hong Kong Police Reveal $3.5 Billion HKD Fraud Losses in Six Months, Single Cryptocurrency Case Involves $84 Million HKD Loss]
According to a report by Hong Kong media Ming Pao, the Hong Kong police disclosed that in the first half of this year, a total of 20,613 fraud cases of various types were recorded in Hong Kong, involving total losses of approximately $3.5 billion HKD. Among them, there were 2,151 investment fraud cases, accounting for about one-tenth of all fraud cases, but causing losses as high as $1.66 billion HKD. One of these cases involved cryptocurrency investment fraud, with a loss amounting to approximately $84 million HKD. The victim was lured into investing and transferring cryptocurrency into an electronic wallet provided by the perpetrator, only to discover the scam when they were unable to withdraw their assets.
The Hong Kong police also provided an update on the progress of the JPEX virtual asset fraud case, which is still under investigation. So far, there are approximately 2,800 victims, with losses amounting to about $1.6 billion HKD. Since 2023, law enforcement has arrested 81 individuals, 29 of whom have been charged with conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice, among other offenses.
