[Samsung HBM4 Yield Rate Reaches 80% Four Months Ahead of Schedule, Aims to Increase HBM Market Share to Approximately 38% by Year-End]
BlockBeats News, August 9: According to South Korea's *Seoul Economic Daily*, Samsung Electronics, which became the first in the world to mass-produce and ship the sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4) in February this year, has recently achieved a yield rate close to 80%. Initially, the yield rate during mass production was below 60%, but it stabilized within six months, reaching the 80% target approximately four months ahead of the original year-end goal. In the semiconductor industry, an 80% yield rate is often referred to as the "golden yield rate," signifying that a company can reduce defect rates while ensuring stable production and improving profitability.
Samsung Electronics stated that with the HBM4 yield rate entering a stable range, the company plans to increase HBM4 revenue in the third quarter to more than three times that of the previous quarter and raise HBM4's share of total HBM revenue in the second half of the year to over 60%. The company has also set a goal to increase its HBM market share to approximately 38%—similar to its DRAM market share—by the end of the year.
The increased supply of HBM4 is also expected to drive the production of NVIDIA's Vera Rubin AI accelerators. Lee Jong-hwan, a professor in the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering at Sangmyung University in South Korea, stated that for major clients like NVIDIA, sourcing from multiple suppliers is more advantageous than relying on a single company. Samsung Electronics can leverage the expansion of HBM4 supply as a tool to rapidly increase its market share. [Original Article Link]
