OpenAI: Free users will gain unlimited text chat functionality, GPT-5.6 Sol update announced

The same model will support both instant responses and deep reasoning, with users able to adjust the level of thought for each response using a newly added slider. OpenAI stated that in internal evaluations on financial, medical, and legal queries, compared to GPT-5.5 Instant, GPT-5.6 Luna reduced responses with at least one factual error by approximately 62%, while GPT-5.6 Sol reduced them by about 68%. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users this week. Starting next week, free users will be able to engage in unlimited text chats and use the newly added Think button to handle questions requiring deeper reasoning, though they will still be subject to anti-abuse mechanisms. File uploads, images, and other tools will continue to have usage restrictions.
