Sam, the creator of the Move language and co-founder of Sui, announced that he’s leaving the crypto space to join Anthropic. If this had happened two years ago, people might have scoffed, but now, all we can do is wish him well. Deep down, we all know he made the right choice. As one of the core members who joined Facebook Libra early on, he personally wrote the Move code from scratch in the lab, and after facing heavy regulatory pressure, he left with his team to create Sui. I believe back then, he was firmly convinced that blockchain was the future, and that Move, which he nurtured, was the most suitable language for blockchain. From a technical perspective, it was later proven that Move is indeed more native compared to Solidity. Funny enough, exactly four years ago today, on August 6th, I wrote an in-depth report on Move. After analyzing its overall design, if Solidity is Android, then Move can definitely be called the iOS of the blockchain world. Unfortunately, the blockchain that was supposed to revolutionize the world didn’t manage to become Web3.0. It couldn’t even secure its own independent position within the crypto space. I can empathize with Sam’s feelings over these eight years. He created what might be the best blockchain programming language, but even at Sui’s peak two years ago, they had to rely on memes to pump the project. So much talent, yet nowhere to fully apply it. Meanwhile, AI is booming next door, truly changing the world just as Sam had envisioned—only the protagonist isn’t blockchain. Maybe the bull market will really come at the end of the year. Maybe Sam’s decision to leave is just before the dawn. But so what? He’s not short on money or fame. With all his passion and exceptional skills, and now nearing 40, if he doesn’t do something new, will his life just end like this?
